GenesisCare will be the first UK-based provider to bring Lunit’s innovative mammogram AI software into clinical use, helping clinicians identify subtle early changes in mammogram images which may be invisible to the human eye.
The partnership and investment mark an important step towards AI-enhanced breast cancer screening. Automatic breast density scoring and lesion detection will support clinicians’ assessment of mammograms, with the aim of supporting earlier diagnosis, fewer unnecessary callbacks and biopsies, and faster access to the right treatment when cancer is found.
Patients attending breast screening at GenesisCare, the UK’s leading cancer care provider, will soon benefit from clinically validated AI technology that supports radiologists in two key areas: automatic breast density scoring and lesion detection, identifying suspicious areas that may indicate cancer. These capabilities provide additional information to support confident, consistent mammogram interpretation. Evidence from real-world use of Lunit INSIGHT Breast Suite has shown a 13.8% increase in cancers detected in screening images1, alongside reductions in recall rates and false positives2, helping more patients receive answers sooner while avoiding unnecessary follow-up appointments where possible.
Dr Fleur Kilburn-Toppin, GenesisCare’s Specialist Advisor for Breast Radiology, said: “This is a significant development for our patients. Mammograms can reveal very early signs of breast cancer, but some changes are extremely small, subtle or difficult to distinguish, particularly in dense breast tissue. Automatic breast density scoring gives us additional information to inform assessment, while AI-supported lesion detection highlights suspicious areas for closer review. Together, these tools support our interpretation of mammograms and our ability to detect cancer earlier.
“For patients, that means greater reassurance that their mammogram has been carried out to a consistently high standard, reviewed with the support of advanced technology and assessed by experienced specialists. Earlier diagnosis can make an enormous difference. When breast cancer is found at an earlier stage, patients may have more treatment options, less intensive treatment and better outcomes. Just as importantly, improving accuracy can help reduce unnecessary callbacks and biopsies, which can cause significant stress and worry for patients and their families.”
Developed by medical imaging software innovator Lunit, the INSIGHT Breast Suite AI technology supports radiologists with image interpretation by identifying suspicious areas and providing malignancy likelihood scoring. Lunit’s breast AI has been extensively evaluated in international clinical studies, is CE-marked under EU Medical Device Regulations, and FDA-cleared for clinical use. While AI enhances insight and efficiency, every mammogram at GenesisCare will continue to be reviewed by two experienced radiologists, with all decisions remaining firmly clinician-led.
The AI tool will also automatically provide a breast density score, giving clinicians a consistent assessment of the amount of dense tissue visible on each mammogram. This matters because dense breast tissue can make cancers harder to detect on mammograms and is associated with a higher risk of developing breast cancer. Understanding breast density helps clinicians assess a patient’s individual risk and consider whether additional imaging may be appropriate.
Jaemin Oh, General Manager - Europe, Middle East and Asia, Lunit International, said: “Lunit INSIGHT Breast Suite supports breast imaging teams through automatic breast density scoring and lesion detection. By assessing breast density and highlighting suspicious areas for clinicians to review, it provides additional insight to support more accurate assessment, including in dense breasts, while helping to reduce unnecessary callbacks. We are honoured to work with GenesisCare to bring this advanced AI review to UK patients.”
This investment reflects GenesisCare’s commitment to responsibly adopting innovation that directly improves patient care. By combining advanced AI with specialist clinical expertise, GenesisCare is helping patients benefit from consistently high-quality imaging, more accurate screening, earlier diagnosis, fewer unnecessary investigations and the best possible chance of improved outcomes.
